Euparin is a sesquiterpene lactone that exhibits anti-inflammatory activity. It has been shown to inhibit the activity of integrin receptor, which is a cell surface protein that binds to extracellular matrix proteins (e.g., collagen) and other molecules. Euparin also inhibits the release of inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α, in vitro by inhibiting NF-κB activation. Euparin has been shown to have both chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic effects on autoimmune diseases in mice. Euparin is active against cancer cells in vitro and has been shown to be effective against bovine leukemia virus (BLV) in vivo. The bioactivity of euparin may be due to its ability to act as an antioxidant by scavenging free radicals or through inhibition of lipid peroxidation.
