Ricinelaidic acid is a natural product that is used as an antimicrobial agent. It has been shown to inhibit translocation of bacteria to the bloodstream, which can lead to bacterial infection. Ricinelaidic acid was synthesized from ricinoleic acid and sodium hydroxide in an inorganic reaction. The compound is structurally related to the fatty acids, with a hydroxyl group on one end and an ester linkage on the other end. This synthesis involved reacting the ricinoleic acid with sodium hydroxide in an anhydrous environment to produce ricinelaidic acid. Ricinelaidic acid also has activity against infectious diseases caused by bacteria such as Helicobacter pylori and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium.
