Violacein is a model system for studying the effects of hydroxyl groups on cell lysis. It is a fatty acid that contains nitrogen atoms and has antimicrobial properties. Violacein has been shown to cause the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential in HL-60 cells, which may be due to its ability to act as a multidrug efflux pump inhibitor. Violacein also exhibits antimicrobial activity against several bacterial strains, including MRSA and methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA). In addition, violacein has been shown to induce cell lysis in vitro via the degradation of proteins and lipids in the cytoplasm.
