3β-Hydroxy-4-androstenone is a hormone that has been shown to have a role in pregnancy. 3β-Hydroxy-4-androstenone is synthesized in the cytoplasm and then secreted into the blood, where it binds to progesterone receptors and produces a variety of effects. This hormone is found in women with preeclampsia, which is characterized by high blood pressure and protein in the urine after 20 weeks of gestation. 3β-Hydroxy-4-androstenone has also been shown to be produced by cells of the immune system and other tissues such as bone marrow, skin, breast tissue, and prostate gland. It has been shown that 3β-hydroxy-4-androstenone increases estradiol production by paracrine signaling on ovarian granulosa cells. The levels of this hormone increase during pregnancies with uncomplicated course.
