3-Benzalphthalide is a viscous liquid that has been found to inhibit the growth of bacteria. It can be synthesized by reacting benzaldehyde with copper chloride in the presence of a diphenyl ether, followed by hydrolysis. 3-Benzalphthalide can also be obtained from natural sources such as the oils of plants, such as black pepper and thyme. The compound acts as a growth regulator and has been shown to have an inhibitory potency on bacterial species such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. 3-Benzalphthalide is an alicyclic compound with two isomers: cis and trans.
