Allyl benzoate also reacts with formaldehyde to produce an allyl carbonate. This compound can be used in the synthesis of influenza virus vaccine. Allyl benzoate has been shown to have antiviral properties against influenza A virus, which may be due to its ability to inhibit viral protein synthesis by inhibiting ribosomal activity and preventing viral maturation. It also inhibits tumor growth through its ability to inhibit DNA polymerase.
