It inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase, which is involved in melanin synthesis. Dimethylammonium dimethyldithiocarbamate reacts with the phenol group of tyrosine to form an intermediate that undergoes a nucleophilic attack by the thiol group of carbon disulphide, leading to the formation of an adduct.
