2,4'-Dihydroxybenzophenone is a synthetic compound that belongs to the class of chromones. It is used as an industrial intermediate in the manufacture of other compounds. 2,4'-Dihydroxybenzophenone can be synthesized by two different synthetic methods. One method starts with a benzoyl chloride and uses cyclization reaction to produce a 3-formyl group. The other method starts with an alkyne and uses cyclization reaction to produce a 3-formyl group. Both methods are shown below:
The first synthesis begins with benzoyl chloride and undergoes an axial cyclization reaction to produce 2,4'-dihydroxybenzophenone:
The second synthesis begins with an alkyne and undergoes circumferential cyclization reaction to produce 2,4'-dihydroxybenzophenone:
Both methods use similar chemical reactions that require heat and pressure.
