The chemical reaction of 3-chloro-o-xylene with hydrogen sulfate produces hydrogen chloride and sulfuric acid; the chlorine atom can then react with biphenyl to form chlorobiphenyls. The addition of a metal ion catalyst promotes the oxidation of 3-chloro-o-xylene to produce chlorine gas, which can be used as an oxidizer in organic synthesis or as a bleaching agent for pulp mills.
