It also binds to DNA and inhibits bacterial growth by interacting with bacterial enzymes involved in DNA synthesis. 3,4,5-Trichlorophenol has been shown to reduce nitric oxide production in mammalian cells at concentrations lower than 100 μM. The chemical is photodegraded when exposed to light and may be used as an analytical method for chlorine in drinking water.
