- Phenol, 3,4,5-trichloro-
3,4,5-Trichlorophenol is an organic compound that is a colorless solid with a sweet odor. It can exist in three forms: the cis form, the trans form, and the erythro form. The cis form has a melting point of 105 °C and a boiling point of 250 °C. 3,4,5-Trichlorophenol has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on fatty acid synthesis by binding to the enzyme acetyl-CoA carboxylase. It also binds to DNA and inhibits bacterial growth by interacting with bacterial enzymes involved in DNA synthesis. 3,4,5-Trichlorophenol has been shown to reduce nitric oxide production in mammalian cells at concentrations lower than 100 μM. The chemical is photodegraded when exposed to light and may be used as an analytical method for chlorine in drinking water.
