The exciplex formed between N-methyl-o-toluidine and nitrogen dioxide can be detected using ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy. This compound has been shown to have activation energy of 23 kcal/mol at temperatures above 100°C and below 300°C. Techniques used to measure the activation energy include butyllithium and supercritical fluid techniques.
