Hydromethylthionine is a redox buffer that is used in wastewater treatment. It is also used as a model system for biological treatment, where it can be used to study the transport properties of amyloid protein. Hydromethylthionine has been shown to have transport properties that are similar to those of methylene and linear calibration curves. Hydromethylthionine has good chemical stability and does not decompose readily in tissue culture or rat liver microsomes.
