3-Nitrochalcone is a chalcone that is stereoselectively synthesized by the catalyzed reaction of chalcones with bromides. It has been shown to have cytotoxic activity in vitro against tumor cells and can be used as an antitumor agent. 3-Nitrochalcone has been shown to inhibit proliferation of human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells through inhibition of DNA synthesis, protein synthesis, and RNA synthesis. The mechanism of action may be due to its ability to bind to DNA, RNA polymerase, and ribosomes. Nitro groups are also found on the molecule, which may contribute to its cytotoxicity by removing electrons from the molecule or releasing free radicals that cause oxidative damage.
