Description:1-Chloro-4-ethylbenzene is a naphthalene derivative that is used in the manufacture of dyes. It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of hepatic enzymes, such as cytochrome P450, and can inhibit the activity of some bacterial enzymes, such as DNA gyrase. The reaction products from 1-chloro-4-ethylbenzene are chloride and energy (kinetic energy). In vitro assays have demonstrated that 1-chloro-4-ethylbenzene inhibits human liver microsomal cytochrome P450 and other enzyme activities. Clinical use includes treatment of hyperbilirubinemia in neonates with Crigler–Najjar syndrome.
