Phenyl propionate is a pheromone that binds to the cavity of a protein receptor in the insect olfactory system. This binding stimulates the release of ethyl formate, which then interacts with the antennae and triggers the mating response. Phenyl propionate has been shown to be effective in diabetic control in rats by regulating insulin release and reducing glucose levels. It also has been shown to prevent weight gain and increase muscle mass. The mechanism of action for this effect is unknown, but it may be due to its ability to decrease food intake by activating specific sites in the brain. Phenyl propionate may also have an effect on infectious diseases such as malaria and dengue fever, postulating that exposure will reduce infection. There are no known side effects for humans at this time, but it is possible that prolonged exposure may cause allergic reactions or skin irritation.
