Propyl Levulinate is a protein inhibitor that belongs to the class of levulinate esters. It reacts with hydrochloric acid to form an ester, propyl levulinate hydrochloride. Propyl Levulinate has been shown to have anticancer effects in vitro and in vivo. This drug inhibits the activity of fatty acid synthase, which is an enzyme involved in the synthesis of fatty acids. The inhibition of this enzyme leads to a decrease in the production of prostaglandin E2 and other free radicals, which are associated with tumor growth and progression. Propyl Levulinate has also been shown to inhibit the formation of metastable forms of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, a carcinogenic metabolite produced by cytochrome P450 enzymes.
