Description:3-Phenyl-2-oxazolidinone is a potent antibacterial agent. It has been shown to be active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Mycobacterium avium complex and Escherichia coli. 3-Phenyl-2-oxazolidinone has also been shown to inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in culture. The mechanism of action is not yet fully understood but may involve inhibition of cell wall synthesis or protein synthesis. 3-Phenyl-2-oxazolidinone also exhibits antiviral activity against human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV).
