2,3-Naphthalic anhydride is a naphthalene derivative that can be used to synthesize amides, amines and other organic compounds. It is obtained by the reaction of 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene with a metal halide such as chloride or bromide. This reaction produces 2,3-naphthalic anhydride in high yield. The compound has been used as a precursor for the fluorescent derivative naphthofluorescein and propiolic acid. A synthetic process for this compound was first developed in 1887 by R. Pinner and L. Hahn. The compound has been found to have numerous applications in the production of plastics, textiles and dyes.
