Benzaldehyde diethyl acetal (BDA) is a derivative of benzaldehyde that is used as a conditioning agent for detergents. It reacts with metal hydroxides to form acidic reaction products. The reaction solution becomes acidic due to the protonation of the carboxylic acid group and the deuterium isotope effect on the aliphatic hydrocarbon. This product has been shown to have potent antitumor activity in animal studies, which may be due to its ability to inhibit DNA synthesis and protein synthesis. BDA has also been shown to react with aromatic hydrocarbons, such as phenols, to form ether linkages.
