Description:Tetrabenazine is a drug that has been used to treat hyperactivity and other movement disorders. It is an ethoxycarbonyl derivative of amphetamine and a formyl derivative of benzene. Tetrabenazine has been shown to decrease blood pressure in animals and to be anorectic. The drug is also used as a treatment for depression, although it can produce undesirable side effects such as insomnia, dry mouth, blurred vision, nausea, weight loss, and constipation. Tetrabenazine is available in two geometric isomers: the cis form (S-tetrabenazine) and the trans form (R-tetrabenazine). Both forms have similar biological activity and are used interchangeably in medical practice.
