Benzyl Phenyl Sulfide is a sulfoxide that is used as a sterilant. It reacts with water to form the hydroxyl group and chlorine atom, which are both reactive species. The reaction intermediates for this chemical include the disulfide bond, benzyl, and sulfide. Benzyl Phenyl Sulfide can be prepared by reacting phenol with thiourea in the presence of chlorine gas or hydrogen sulfide. This chemical has been shown to be effective in a model system that simulates radiation sterilization reactions. It is also capable of forming acid complexes with diphenyl sulfoxide and transferring disulfides to other molecules.
