Description:

5,5-Dimethyl-1,3-dioxane is a byproduct of the polymerization reaction between ethylene oxide and propylene oxide. It is used in wastewater treatment to remove organic pollutants. 5,5-Dimethyl-1,3-dioxane reacts with benzene to form dioxanes and yields of dioxanes are increased when phenyl groups are present. The conformation of 5,5-Dimethyl-1,3-dioxane is cyclic and it can react with terephthalic acid or alcohols to form telomerization products. When reacted with oxygen atoms from air, 5,5-Dimethyl-1,3-dioxane will create organic compounds such as ethers or esters.
