Description

Terbutryn is a herbicide that is used to control vegetation. It inhibits the activity of the enzyme ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBisCO), which leads to a decrease in the production of glycolic acid and an increase in the production of oxalic acid during photosynthesis. Terbutryn inhibits carbon dioxide fixation in plants and interferes with their ability to synthesize proteins. This chemical also has been shown to have inhibitory levels against algae, bacteria, fungi, and certain viruses. The analytical method for terbutryn consists of thin layer chromatography with picolinic acid as a reagent. Terbutryn reacts with picolinic acid at the active site of RuBisCO and causes it to lose its biological activity.
