Description:
1,4-Dihydropyrazine-2,3-dione is a chromophore that is present in naphthalene. It can exist as two tautomers: 1,4 dihydropyrazine-2,3-dione and 1,5 dihydropyrazine-2,3-dione. The molecule has been used to study the function of cells by observing their dysfunction in the presence of an organic solvent. This cell dysfunction has been shown to be due to the inhibition of cellular respiration and ATP production. The compound also affects the circulatory system by inhibiting nitric oxide production which leads to vasoconstriction.
