Endosulfan is a chemical pesticide that belongs to the group of organochlorine compounds. It has been found to have anti-ovarian properties and can lead to infertility, birth defects, and potential carcinogenic effects. Endosulfan is also a potential biomarker for environmental exposure, as it has been found in maternal blood samples. The analytical method for endosulfan includes solid phase microextraction followed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GCMS). Endosulfan can be analyzed in wastewater treatment systems by using an enzyme activity assay based on the detection of endosulfan-degrading enzymes or biochemical composition analysis. This pesticide is a potent inhibitor of energy metabolism and causes acute toxicities in rats when given at high doses.
