Cephamycin C is a cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins and blocking the cross-linking of peptidoglycan. Cephamycin C has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against wild-type strains of bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The cephamycin C molecule binds to the penicillin-binding protein in the bacterial cell wall by competitive inhibition. This binding prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. The mechanism of action of cephamycin C has been elucidated using a model system consisting of lysed human serum and DNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
