Chlortetracycline hydrochloride is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. It is used in veterinary and human medicine to treat infections caused by Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including those that are resistant to other antibiotics. Chlortetracycline hydrochloride has been shown to have anti-cancer properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit DNA synthesis and cell division in tumor cells. This drug also has been shown to prevent the formation of new blood vessels in tumors, thereby starving them of oxygen. Chlortetracycline hydrochloride also binds with calcium ions, which may increase its effectiveness as an antibiotic.
