Cefotaxime sodium is a β-lactam antibiotic that inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria. It is used to treat bacterial infections, such as urinary tract infections and pneumonia, and has been shown to be effective against many different types of bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics. Cefotaxime sodium can be given intravenously or intramuscularly, but should not be given orally. Cefotaxime sodium is often combined with potassium clavulanate due to its synergistic effects. This combination has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against bacteria that produce β-lactamase enzymes.
