Ceftarolin fosamil is a cephalosporin antibiotic that also has a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Ceftarolin fosamil is rapidly metabolized to ceftaroline in vivo, which inhibits the bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to the penicillin-binding protein, thereby preventing bacterial growth. Ceftarolin fosamil has been shown to be effective in treating both localized and disseminated infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Ceftarolin fosamil is not active against Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex
