Cefteram is a human serum derived drug that is used for the treatment of infectious diseases, such as tissue infections and urinary tract infections. It is a prodrug of ceftriaxone, which is an oral cephalosporin antibiotic. Cefteram is converted by hydrolysis to the active form of ceftriaxone in the intestines and then absorbed into the bloodstream. Cefteram has been shown to have pharmacokinetic properties similar to those of ceftriaxone in humans with normal kidney function. Cefteram has also been shown to be effective against bacteria resistant to penicillin-binding protein (PBP) inhibitors. Cell lysis occurs as a result of cefteram binding to PBP, which prevents bacterial cells from creating new cell walls.
