Cefuroxime axetil is a prodrug of cefuroxime, a broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic. It is used to treat bacterial infections such as streptococcal pharyngitis, acute sinusitis, and uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections. Cefuroxime axetil has an analytical method that can be used to determine the rate constant for its hydrolysis by ileal mucosa in vitro. This drug has been shown to have antibacterial efficacy against a wide range of bacteria and does not inhibit the production of cytokines (IL-2 receptor) or other inflammatory mediators (toll-like receptor). There are no known drug interactions with this drug, although it has been shown to cause toxic epidermal necrolysis when administered intravenously in combination with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
