Chlortetracycline hydrochloride is a tetracycline antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial infections. It has been shown to be effective against streptococcus faecalis and other bacteria in urine samples, as well as in wastewater treatment. Chlortetracycline hydrochloride binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit and inhibits protein synthesis by preventing amino acid transfer from the cytoplasmic side of the membrane to the ribosome. It also has a radiation-sensitive component that can be removed by exposure to gamma radiation. The analytical method for chlortetracycline hydrochloride involves gravimetric analysis, acidification with hydrochloric acid, and neutralization with sodium hydroxide or ammonia solution. Chlortetracycline hydrochloride is not suitable for use in biological assays because it interferes with many biochemical reactions due to its chemical structures, including hydrogen bonds.
