Clindamycin sulfoxide is a semisynthetic antibiotic that inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. It has low bioavailability and is used to treat infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis, and for biological treatment of wastewater. Clindamycin sulfoxide is also used in analytical methods for the determination of antibiotics in water samples. This drug undergoes glucuronidation in humans, which leads to its low bioavailability. The sulfoxide metabolite is formed from oxidation of clindamycin at the 2-position through cytochrome P450 enzymes. This metabolite has been shown to be active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
