Danofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. Danofloxacin is used to treat infectious diseases, including respiratory infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae. It also has been shown to be effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium perfringens. Danofloxacin binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. The drug has been shown to have no significant toxicity in humans, rats, or mice. A major limitation of danofloxacin is its high cost.
