Description

Carumonam is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that has a high affinity for the penicillin-binding protein, which is expressed in E. coli and other gram-negative bacteria. It binds to the PBPs, thereby inhibiting DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV activity and preventing bacterial growth. Carumonam has been shown to have a prolonged half-life in human serum due to its low clearance rate. This drug is not active against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) or Enterobacteriaceae, but it has been used successfully in some cases of infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae or Moraxella catarrhalis. Carumonam also has antidiabetic effects that are similar to those of pergolide mesylate, an antihypertensive agent that is used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. The mechanism of action of
