Cefepime is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. It has been shown to be effective against a number of multidrug-resistant pathogens, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii, through the use of a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. Cefepime's efficacy can also be increased with the addition of glucose injection, which increases the release of cefepime from its carrier in the blood stream. This drug has been shown to have synergistic effects with other antimicrobial agents.
Cefepime has been shown to have good resistance to chemiluminescence methods such as luminol-enhanced chemiluminescence (LECL). It reacts with luminol in a 1:1 ratio and produces light at around 480 nm when excited at 320 nm. This characteristic makes it an effective tool for wastewater treatment as well
