Cefacetrile sodium is a low-potency, chemically stable, broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that is active against gram-positive bacteria. It has been shown to bind to penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall by competitive inhibition. This binding prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. Cefacetrile sodium also has low solubility in water, which makes it difficult to administer orally. The drug may be administered intravenously or intramuscularly as an injection or taken by mouth as a tablet or suspension.
