Clindamycin is an antibiotic that belongs to the group of lincosamides. It is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed in vivo to clindamycin, its active form. Clindamycin 4-phosphate has been shown to be effective against methicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). It also has no effect on acid-fast bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex. Clindamycin 4-phosphate binds to bacterial ribosomal proteins by competitive inhibition and blocks protein synthesis, leading to cell death. This drug is not absorbed when taken orally, but can be administered intravenously or through intramuscular injection. The most common side effects are diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and headache.
