Ceftriaxone sodium is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that has been shown to have broad spectrum activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including penicillin-resistant strains. Ceftriaxone sodium is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed in vivo to the active form ceftriaxone. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) on the bacterial cell wall by competitive inhibition, leading to inhibition of cell wall synthesis. Ceftriaxone sodium has been shown to be effective for the treatment of infectious diseases such as bowel disease, toxic epidermal necrolysis, and sepsis. Ceftriaxone sodium inhibits bacterial cell growth by binding to PBPs on the surface of bacterial cells. The drug also has an effect on certain human cells due to its ability to bind with human PBP enzymes.
