Cefuroxime sodium is an antibiotic that belongs to the cephalosporin family. It is a white, crystalline powder with a molecular weight of 462.3 and a melting point of 140-143 degrees Celsius. Cefuroxime sodium is soluble in water and has a pH of 5-7. The drug has been used as an injection to treat infections caused by bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Proteus species, Klebsiella species, Enterobacter species, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens, Citrobacter species, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. Cefuroxime sodium has been shown to control the growth of Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes in vitro at an optimum concentration of 0.25 μg/ml for 24 hours.
