Deacetylanisomycin is a macrolide antibiotic that belongs to the class of epidermal growth factor (EGF) mimetics. It binds to EGF receptors and blocks protein synthesis, leading to cell death. Deacetylanisomycin has been shown to have anticancer properties, including the ability to enhance tumor necrosis factor-α-mediated apoptosis in mouse models of cancer. Deacetylanisomycin also has immunosuppressive effects on cells by inhibiting T-cell proliferation and inhibiting production of interleukin-2 and tumor necrosis factor-α. Deacetylanisomycin inhibits the growth of autoimmune disease cells in culture by preventing activation of transcription factors such as NF-κβ and AP-1. This drug prevents the activation of these transcription factors by blocking phosphorylation at serine residues, which are necessary for their function.
