N-Desisobutyl-N-propyl rifabutin is a synthetic, broad spectrum antibiotic that is used to treat infections caused by bacteria and protozoans. The drug inhibits DNA synthesis by binding to the ribosome at the 50S subunit. It also binds to RNA polymerase and has antiviral properties against HIV. N-Desisobutyl-N-propyl rifabutin is structurally related to rifampicin, but it is not active against the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. It has been found to be effective in treating some strains of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). This antibiotic has been shown to have bactericidal activity against Gram negative bacteria such as Enterobacter cloacae, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa
