Product Information
- 14-Hydroxy Carminomycin
Doxorubicin is a chemotherapy drug that inhibits the growth of tumor cells. It is also an antibiotic and antiviral agent that affects microbial and viral cells. Doxorubicin binds to the DNA of tumor cells, preventing the DNA from unwinding to form the double helix. This binding prevents RNA polymerase from transcribing the DNA into mRNA, which in turn prevents protein synthesis. Microbes are affected by doxorubicin because it binds to their DNA and prevents RNA polymerase from transcribing DNA into mRNA, which in turn prevents protein synthesis. The antiviral effects of doxorubicin are due to its ability to inhibit viral RNA-dependent DNA polymerases. Doxorubicin is highly purified and has been shown to be effective against many types of microbes, including parasites and fungi as well as bacteria.
