Difloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits the bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes. Difloxacin has been shown to be effective against infectious diseases, such as urinary tract infections, bronchitis, and pneumonia. It has also been used in treatment trials for chronic inflammatory diseases such as autoimmune diseases and rheumatoid arthritis. This drug has been shown to inhibit the growth of resistant mutants, which may be due to its ability to act on both DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes. Difloxacin binds to the 16S RNA of bacterial ribosomes by competitive inhibition, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis, leading to cell death.
