Product Information
- 16-Hydroxy erythromycin
Erythromycin F is a erythromycin derivative that is the most potent member of this antibiotic class. It is a racemic mixture of two enantiomers, with the (S)-enantiomer being more active than the (R)-enantiomer. Erythromycin F has been shown to be effective against a wide range of bacteria and fungi, including strains resistant to other antibiotics such as penicillin and tetracycline. In addition, it has been shown to have beneficial effects on cholesterol levels in humans. Erythromycin F binds to bacterial ribosomes and inhibits protein synthesis by preventing the attachment of amino acids to tRNA molecules. This drug also inhibits fatty acid synthesis in bacteria because it prevents the incorporation of acetate into fatty acids. The activity of erythromycin F against gram-positive bacteria was first reported using a liquid chromatographic method on strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolated from human blood cultures
