Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic that inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. 7-epi-Clindamycin is a metabolite of clindamycin and has been shown to have a high affinity for bacterial ribosomes. The drug exhibits low detection limits and can be quantified with liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry analysis. 7-epi-Clindamycin has been found to be active against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Mycobacterium avium complex, Brucella abortus, and Haemophilus influenzae.
