Fostriecin is a biocompatible polymer that is being investigated as a potential anticancer agent. It induces apoptosis by binding to the pro-apoptotic protein Bax, which causes mitochondrial membrane depolarization and release of cytochrome c. Fostriecin has been shown to be effective in vitro against various types of cancer cells, including carcinoma cell lines and myocardial infarcts in animal models. Fostriecin has also been shown to inhibit the replication of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in vitro. The mechanism behind this effect is not well understood, but it may be due to an inhibition of viral DNA synthesis or an induction of apoptosis.
