Description:Intoplicine is an active analogue of the antibiotic erythromycin. It has inhibitory properties against a wide range of bacteria and fungi, including Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. Intoplicine inhibits fatty acid synthesis in bacterial cells by binding to the enzyme hydroxylase. Intoplicine also has cytotoxic effects in human HL-60 and K562 cells. The mechanism of action is not yet known but may be due to inhibition of DNA synthesis or protein synthesis by binding to the cell membrane. Intoplicine binds to the lipid bilayer and alters its permeability.
