- Gentamicin C1
Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that has been used to treat a number of bacterial infections. Gentamicin C1 pentaacetate is a prodrug that is converted to gentamicin in the body. It is used to treat bowel disease and may be combined with other drugs such as colchicine, sulfasalazine, or mesalamine. Gentamicin C1 pentaacetate binds to human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL) and prevents them from moving through the bowel wall. The rate constant for this binding process was determined by colloidal gold labeling experiments on PMNLs and polymyxin B. This binding results in PMNLs being unable to remove bacteria from the lumen of the intestine, which can lead to chronic diarrhea. Gentamicin C1 pentaacetate also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to down regulate inflammatory cytokines such as IL-8, TNF
