Product Information
Herbicidin B is a synthetic, carbon-substituted terpene that has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of bacterial growth. It has been shown to have stereoselective activity against Gram-positive bacteria and no activity against Gram-negative bacteria. Herbicidin B binds to the enzyme enolate, which is involved in microbial carbohydrate chemistry. The binding site for this compound is an "active" pharmacophore that is composed of a proton and two carbonyl groups. This active form of herbicidin B can be detected using spectrometry analyses with organic solvents. Herbicidin B also has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by inhibiting protein synthesis, leading to cell death by preventing the production of proteins vital for cell division.
